The Christmas ponche is a traditional hot Mexican drink enjoyed during the month of December, especially during posadas. It is comforting, aromatic, and full of fruit.
🧺 Ingredients (6–8 servings)
(All easy to find in European supermarkets)
3 liters of water
2 cinnamon sticks
150 g brown sugar or panela (adjust to taste)
4–5 apples (Golden or Granny Smith), diced
1 orange, sliced
1 cup fresh pineapple or canned pineapple (in its own juice)
100 g dried plums or a handful of raisins
2 guavas, sliced
1–2 cloves
1 star anise (optional)
Optional (adult version):
A splash of rum, brandy, or aguardiente added when serving 🍹
👩🍳 Step-by-step preparation
Boil the base:
In a large pot, bring the water to a boil together with the cinnamon, cloves, and star anise. Let it boil for 10 minutes so the aromas infuse.
Add the firmer fruits:
Add the apples, guavas, and pineapple. Cook over medium heat for about 15 minutes.
Add the rest:
Add the orange, dried plums and/or raisins, and the sugar. Continue cooking for another 10–15 minutes until the fruit is soft.
Taste and adjust:
Adjust the sweetness if needed and remove from heat.
Serve hot:
Serve piping hot, with fruit pieces in every cup. For adults, add a splash of alcohol to taste.
💡 Mexsabores Tips
If you find hibiscus tea (jamaica flower), you can add a little for a more traditional touch and a deeper color.
You can prepare the ponche in advance and reheat it before serving.
It is perfect to enjoy with tamales, pan dulce, or Christmas cookies.
